Sonia Delaunay, Before Her Time

Sonia Delaunay, Before Her Time

Happy Birthday Sonia Delaunay!

Before we were “Keeping up with Everybody” or “Pinning” to our latest style board, there was an amazing woman artist who not only created art known for its color and movement, but applied it to many mediums beyond the traditional canvas or paper.

Sonia Delaunay was born November 14, 1885 in the Ukraine, and spent most of her working life in Paris. Her paintings, that use geometric abstraction, are beautiful in their own right — but its how she spread her art into the world made her a risk-taker. If she were here today, she would be on everyone’s “one to watch”. Sonia created art her way and on her terms, “I am free and mean to remain so”. She used the world as her stage and integrated her art into fashion, furniture, wall coverings, fabric and even a car.

Sonia was thinking about her brand and the impact it can make, long before we all know it today. One of the co-curators of her 2015 Tate Modern Retrospective had said, “She was a kind of a complete artist: here is the artist, dressed by herself, in front of fabric designed by herself, or painted by herself!”.

So, today on Sonia’s birthday, I would like to thank her for being an inspiration to me and the path she paved to bringing art and design into the real world…an amazing story of bringing a brand to life.

I picked out a few of my favorites from Sonia’s body of work…enjoy!
